How to Package and Post Worn Items Discreetly
Good packaging keeps items fresh and keeps your privacy intact. Here’s a step-by-step guide to posting worn items discreetly, at home and abroad.
Packaging is one of the most overlooked parts of selling worn items, but it makes a huge difference. Done well, it keeps the item exactly as the buyer expects, protects both of your privacy and means nobody handling the parcel has any idea what’s inside. Here’s how to package and post worn items discreetly, step by step.
Step 1: Seal the item quickly
The sooner a worn item is sealed, the better it holds up in transit. Most sellers bag items straight after taking them off. You have two main options:
- Zip-lock bags: cheap, easy to find and fine for most items. Squeeze out as much air as you can before sealing.
- Vacuum seal bags: a tighter seal that locks in freshness and makes parcels smaller and flatter. A small vacuum sealer is a worthwhile buy if you sell regularly.
For longer journeys or international orders, double-bagging adds an extra layer of protection. Use bags that are a sensible size for the item, as smaller bags trap less air.
Step 2: Add a personal touch (optional)
Many buyers love a small extra, such as a handwritten thank-you note. Keep it outside the sealed bag so it stays clean and dry. Never include anything with your real name, address or other identifying details.
Step 3: Choose plain outer packaging
The outer packaging should be completely unremarkable. Use a plain padded envelope, a grey mailing bag or a small plain box. Avoid anything branded, colourful or reused from another delivery with old labels still visible.
Nothing on the outside should hint at what’s inside. No usernames, no site names and no descriptions on customs forms beyond what’s required, such as "clothing". The goal is a parcel that looks like any other online order.
Step 4: Protect your return address
This is where many new sellers slip up. A return address on a parcel tells the buyer, and anyone else who sees it, where you live. A few alternatives:
- A PO box or mail forwarding address, which gives you a return address that isn’t your home.
- Leaving the return address off, though this means undeliverable parcels can’t come back to you.
- Parcel lockers and drop-off points, which let you send parcels without visiting a counter.
Buyers can protect their privacy the same way, by having orders delivered to a parcel locker, a collection point or a PO box rather than their home address.
Step 5: Use tracked postage
Tracked postage costs a little more, but it’s almost always worth it. It shows the parcel was sent, lets both of you see where it is and helps avoid disputes about whether something arrived. It also tends to lead to better reviews, because buyers feel looked after.
Factor postage into your pricing. On Scent From Me, you add the postage cost when you accept each order, so it matches what that parcel will really cost to send, and the buyer sees the full total before they pay.
Step 6: Only post once you’ve been paid
Never send an item before payment has cleared. On Scent From Me, buyers pay sellers directly using the method the seller has chosen, and the seller’s payment details are only shown once they’ve accepted the order. Once you’ve confirmed payment, post the item and let the buyer know it’s on its way through the site’s messaging.
Posting internationally
Scent From Me has members in both the UK and the US, so international orders do come up. A few things to bear in mind:
- Customs forms are usually required. Describe the item simply and honestly, for example "clothing" or "socks".
- International postage takes longer, so vacuum sealing and double-bagging are a good idea.
- Use tracked international postage where possible.
- Postage costs more, so make sure your price covers it.
- Rules on sending used clothing vary between countries, so check the destination’s rules before agreeing to post abroad.
Let international buyers know realistic delivery times before they order. Clear expectations avoid a lot of anxious messages.
A quick packing checklist
- Item sealed in a zip-lock or vacuum bag, air removed.
- Optional note outside the sealed bag, with nothing identifying.
- Plain, unbranded outer packaging.
- Private return address, or none.
- Tracked postage booked.
- Payment confirmed before posting.
- Buyer updated through on-site messages.
Discretion builds trust
Careful, discreet packaging is one of the easiest ways to stand out as a seller and earn great reviews. It protects you, protects your buyer and shows you take the whole experience seriously.
